Detroit, 1967

The true story of one of the most terrifying moments during the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of ’67. Amidst the chaos of the Detroit Rebellion, with the city under curfew and as the Michigan National Guard patrolled the streets, three young African American men were murdered at the Algiers Motel. 50 years after the events of July 25th, 1967, the question remains: what happened at the motel?

I personally think from the trailers this looks like a really good film but unfortunately the film has crashed at the box office over the weekend, the film dropped five spots to the No. 13 position. To date the movie, which carries a budget estimated between $35-$40 million, has earned just $13.4 million. Although it has an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, it also has had some criticism, one review stated that it is not a movie and that “Detroit” is a case study of the limits of the white gaze, while another said “Detroit” a film by white people for white people. I myself cannot wait to see this when it comes out in the U.K on August 25th.

“Detroit” is a case study of the limits of the white gaze.

John Boyega, who played Finn from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015), is Melvin Dismukes, a hard working two-job-a-day guy who is caught up in the middle of the strife, detained and questioned by two intimidating detectives determined to elicit a confession from him.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, she has once again established herself as one of the premier directors of her generation. Her films include the Oscar wining “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty” (which also won an Oscar). “Detroit” is Bigelow’s powerfully told vision of yet another dark time in American history. But the film is not a scathing indictment of police authorities in general, or even all the men in blue from Detroit at the time. Bigelow is careful to showcase, however briefly, the noble behavior of some law enforcement members who sensibly and rationally came to the aid of the victims.

My Opinion; See it now!!
